Christmas came early this year for motorists in Maryland. An armored car’s faulty door sent thousands of dollars of cash flying over a Maryland highway, sending drivers on a money grabbing rampage.

The truck was traveling up I-270 in Urbana Friday morning when one of its doors swung opened and a bag of money fell into the road, the Washington Post reported.

The drivers quickly pulled over, but it was too late: The bag opened in the middle of the highway and thousands of dollars flew out, which sent driver flying out of their cars as well.

“It was crazy. People pulled over and were running all over the place and taking cash,” driver Amanda Ziad

“Everyone hit their brake lights and there was like a cloud of money in the air, and it was just flying all over the place,” another driver, David Minnich said.

Some drivers didn’t even have to get out: They stopped their cars, held their hands out the window and caught the money mid-air, Maryland State Police spokesman Greg Shipley said.

No one was hurt in the chaotic cash grab, Shipley said.

It’s uncertain how much money flew out of the truck, but nearly all of it was gobbled up by motorists. When police searched the area later they only found $200.

Police urged drivers to return the cash, Officers are reviewing traffic cameras and cash grabbers could be charged with theft, Shipley said.

Some people have already returned the cash. One woman already returned $1,160 to state troopers.

“Sorry folks, it is not your money,” he said. “If you picked it up and turn it in, you’re being a good citizen.”
