An Alabama man accused of imprisoning, raping and filming sex acts with his young son was found dead Monday night, hanging in a cell as he was headed to face federal charges in New York, according to the Daily News..

Carl Philip Herold, was facing some 18 child sex counts in Alabama stemming from the sickening abuse, likely committed suicide as he prepared to to face the charges Nov. 21 in a Syracuse federal court, attorney Adam Bollaert told AL.com.

“It’s really shocking to me, when I met with Mr. Herold last week, in Cullman County, he had great spirits, he seemed up and was ready to continue fighting this case,” Bollaert told the outlet. “So, we don’t understand what happened.”

The 33-year-old Herold, arrested in Alabama in November 2013, he had a computer programming background and ran a popular YouTube channel where he livestreamed programming lessons.

After his arrest, prosecutors in Huntsville said the man’s 9-year-old son was not enrolled in school and that they think he was kept in the man’s home without interaction with the outside world for approximately 8 months.

In Alabama, he faced 18 charges including conspiracy to commit sodomy, sexual abuse of a child under 12, sodomy, complicity, aggravated child abuse and conspiracy to commit sexual abuse.

In December 2013, Herold was also indicted in New York, where he once lived, and charged with 10 counts of child pornography production for allegedly forcing his child to “engage in sexually explicit conduct” and filming it, AL.com reported.

The alleged abuse began in August 2011, when the child would have been 7. Herold was en route to begin to face charges there. He would have had to also defend himself against the Alabama charges once the federal case was completed.

Just a month after his arrest in the southern state, police also arrested Herold’s domestic partner, Charles Dunnavant, who was accused of participating in what prosecutors called a child porn ring.

Dunnavant, who remains behind bars on $1 million bond, is charged with sexual torture, sodomy, aggravated child abuse and exposing a person to an STD.

“My reaction to it, ultimately, is I wish that Carl Herold had been brave enough to face justice in Madison County rather than doing what he did,” Jason Scully-Clemmons, a prosecutor in Huntsville, told AL.com. “Today above all else, I’m sad for the victim in this case, as I have been all along.”
