A 15-year-old Texas middle school student who had just started cancer treatment was shot and killed outside of his home Saturday.

Ryan Lara, who was a seventh-grade student at Byrd Middle School, was attempting to move his parents’ car from the street to the driveway Saturday night when police say an assailant with a gun tried to rob him and opened fire, killing the boy according to Fox 4.

The perpetrator fired one of three shots that were fired hit the football player in the back.

Shocked family members ran outside of the house and saw a gray or silver four-door compact sedan speed off.

Ryan’s older brother, Brandon, fired at the car with his own gun as it peeled off, but it was unclear if any bullets hit the car.

“I ran out, stepped over him and proceeded to pull out my pistol with my left hand and started firing at the vehicle with no headlights or no lights on,” the brother said.

Ryan was diagnosed with lymphoma after noticing a lump on his chest about two months ago, had just started cancer therapy, according to family members.

“The doctor said he was doing very well,” said Brandon.

The family was still heart stricken from the death of Ryan’s mother who died about seven years ago, causing him to be held back from school.

“He was very lovable,” said Brandon. “He was like my son because he looked up to me a lot.”

Police are offering a $5,000 reward for anyone with information leading to an arrest.

“He didn’t deserve this and I just hope whoever killed him … what’s done in the dark is soon going to come to the light,” said Brandon.
