An Arizona woman who tried to kill her husband by injecting fecal matter into his IV was sentenced to one year in jail Tuesday.

Rose Mary Vogel, 66, injected feces into her husband’s IV line as he recovered from heart surgery at Chandler Regional Hospital Jan. 30.

Nurses discovered a brown substance in the IV tube that later tested positive for fecal matter.

Vogel pleaded guilty to vulnerable adult abuse back in October.

Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Robert Gottsfield sentenced the retired nurse to four years of probation.

Gottsfield gave her the option to serve her jail time on weekends, according to the Arizona Republic.

“I have no recollection of any of it,” said Rose Mary Vogel, who blamed depression  and claimed she was sleep-deprived at the time.

“I’ve always loved my husband through sickness and in health.”

Husband Phillip Vogel said he forgave her and still loves her.

After 35 years of marriage, the couple plan to go to marriage counseling.

Vogel was not trying to kill her husband but instead sought to take charge of the relationship, Prosecutor Blaine Gadow said.

However, her actions could have killed Phillip Vogel, according to medical experts.

Injecting fecal matter, which has vast quantities of bacteria and viruses, directly into the bloodstream, could lead to deadly sepsis or infection, Banner Poison Center Medical Director Dr. Frank Lovecchio told ABC15.

Police found three syringes in Rose Mary Vogel’s purse at the time, and one needle had a brown substance in it.

Phillip Vogel got sick from the infected IV line but recovered.

The attempted murder charge against the wife was dropped in her plea agreement.
