A man stabbed four people on an Amtrak train in Michigan Friday evening, one victim remains in serious condition, police said.

Niles, Michigan Police said the incident occurred around 7 p.m. and a suspect was arrested.

Niles Police Chief Jim Millin said in a press conference that police responded to a call from Amtrak Chicago that a man on the train was acting in a “strange manner, was agitated and was talking to himself.”

As police arrived at the scene the knife attack was happening and officers rushed on to the train and subdued the suspect with a Taser during the incident.

One female and three male passengers were injured in the attack, including a conductor, Millin said.

Millin said that an older male victim, was in serious condition after being stabbed in the chest area.

He did not know the status of the other victims, but that he did not think they were life-threatening.

A bystander told NBC station WNDU earlier that the suspect first attacked another man and then went after two women nearby.

“I was like ‘Oh my God, he’s punching the guy. I saw him bring his fist back up and I noticed there was something in his fist resembling a knife blade and bring it back down,” a passenger on the train from Chicago to Port Huron, Michigan told WNDU. “He stopped stabbing the guy in front and he lurched forward towards these two other women.”

Police did not release a motive in the attack and said the suspect is from Saginaw, Michigan. He was traveling alone and boarded the train in Chicago.

Amtrak said in a statement it was trying to arrange alternate transportation for 172 passengers on the train, which runs daily between the two cities.
