A DEA special agent suffered a head injury and a broken leg when he was hit by a suspect’s car in a Chicago neighborhood Sunday afternoon, police said.

Police responded to a report of shots being fired at 12:50 p.m., and discovered that a DEA agent was injured during the course of a drug investigation after being hit by a suspect’s vehicle.

The agent was rushed to the Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight.

DEA agents working the investigation near 82nd Street and Kedzie Avenue, had specific information that a man in a vehicle had a shipment of cocaine he was transporting. As the man entered a gas station the agents stopped him. They attempted to take him into custody but the suspect tried fleeing the location, hitting a DEA special agent who was on foot in the area, according to the release and a DEA spokesman.

Agents fired shots at the suspect who is being treated at a hospital, according to the DEA release.

The injured agent is believed to have been the one who fired the shots, according to police.

According to police, after the incident, two people turned up at a local hospital with gunshot wounds, and one of them was identified as the owner of the car used in the attack, police said.

That man is hospitalized, however was placed in police custody after being identified as a suspect in the attack, according to police and the DEA.

The agent, who was intentionally hit by the car,  suffered head trauma, but is believed to be in stable condition. He remains in the care of Christ Medical Center, police said, citing preliminary information.
