Fans went to YouTube on Christmas Eve to rent The Interview after Sony released the film online to thwart hackers’ attempts to prevent its release.

Viewers were able to rent or purchase the controversial comedy, which depicts an attempted assassination on the North Korean dictator, on websites in the U.S, with viewers paying a fee of $6 to watch the movie.

Within hours it had been viewed more than 10,000 times, with viewers sharing their reviews on social media afterwards.

Fans also flocked to cinemas to view the film in with some wearing Christmas outfits for the occasion.

The surge in traffic caused three youtube servers to crash, causing connection disruptions, many viewers have given mostly positive reviews of the spoof parody starring Seth Rogen and James Franco.
