An off-duty Palm Beach County deputy shot and killed his own son on Christmas Eve.

Delray Beach police revealed the identity of the victim as 21-year-old Khamis Shatara, who is the son of a police deputy and like his father apparently wanted to be a cop.

On Friday Delray Beach Police Sgt. Nicole Guerriero confirmed to the New Times that the name of the deputy who killed his son is Shatara K. Shatara, who is a Palm Beach County Deputy.

As for the victim, Khamis Shatara was a criminal justice major at Palm Beach State College who idolized police. He was recently quoted in that college’s newspaper, and a Pinterest account matching Khamis’ name and photo contains several memes honoring police officers. Eerily, one of those memes shows a cop firing a gun at point-blank range.

Police said they received a call about a shooting just before 8 a.m.

When they arrived, they found an off-duty deputy and one person dead from a gunshot wound.

Investigators will only say that the shooting is domestic related.

Delray Beach police department is handling the investigation with the assistance of the state attorney’s office.

A neighbor said she was walking her dogs this morning when she saw dozens of police officers.

Lauren Helerstein said, “I walked out and there were like several cops, I would say about 20 to 30 police officers running by with assault rifles. Everyone had their weapons drawn and they were telling me to get inside my house and lock my door.”

Police continue to investigate what happened. Investigators said they’re trying to gather more information.

Police have not revealed if the deputy lived in the complex or how long he’s been with the sheriff’s office.
