MONROEVILLE (KDKA) — At least one person was taken away by ambulance and the Monroeville Mall had to be shut down Friday evening after police say multiple fights, which witnesses describe as complete chaos, broke out.

The mall was closed down at 8:30 p.m. due to the melee.
According to witnesses, it all started with two teenage girls, and then some other young woman joined in.

After that dispersed, witnesses say more fights started and that’s when police arrived on the scene. As many as 50 people may have been involved.

“All of the sudden there was all this commotion. And there were… you just heard like a stampede and a bunch of people screaming and yelling and then all of the people that worked at the store came running to the front of the store and shut all the doors and locked you in until the police came,” said one witness. “And then there were all kinds of police and they had riot gear on.”

Law enforcement officials from several departments were called in.

A mall spokesperson tells KDKA’s David Highfield that the incidents did not happen at one specific location, but rather all across the entire mall.

The mall employees were escorted out of the building by police around 10 p.m.

There’s no word if there were any arrests or on the condition of the person who was taken away in the ambulance.

Brawl at the Mall: Teens Injured in ‘Multiple Fights’
(NBC News) Two teenagers were injured, one of them taken to hospital, after “multiple fights” forced the closure of a Pittsburgh area shopping mall late Friday, police said. Separate groups of “young adults” got into a series of fights that led to police being called to the Monroeville Mall in Pennsylvania starting at 5.30 p.m. ET, Monroeville Police Chief Doug Cole said.

“It was really insane,” eyewitness Cory Clemente told NBC News. “I ended up locked in American Eagle.” Up to 1,000 teenagers showed up at the mall late Friday, security officers at the mall told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. One fight involved at least a half dozen people, Cole said, adding that a “male juvenile” had been injured and taken to hospital after the first fight while another was later injured. The mall closed early at 8:30 p.m. ET, he said, and multiple citations were issued for disorderly conduct.

Separately, police in Independence, Missouri were called after more than 100 teenagers were involved in a disturbance at the Independence Center mall at about 7 p.m. local time (8 p.m. ET), the local police department said.

In California, cops responded to reports of a shooting at the Arden Mall in Sacramento but the officers instead found there had been fighting in the food court.
