A Michigan Catholic high school tutor who turned down a plea deal to spend months behind bars has been sentenced to 8-25 years in prison after being convicted of having sex with a 15-year-old boy.

Abigail Simon, 35, pleaded with Judge Paul Sullivan for mercy Wednesday and collapsed twice during the hearing at Kent County Circuit Court in Grand Rapids, Mich., WOOD reported.

“I was overtaken by fear and I was scared and lost, felt like I was drowning,” Simon said in court. “I’m sorry I was not strong enough to get away from him.”

Simon was convicted on three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and accosting a minor for immoral purposes on Nov. 26 after a relationship with a 6-foot-3, 220-pound boy she said threatened and coerced her into sex.

“In 25 years, I don’t think we’ve seen anything like it,” Chief Assistant Kent County Prosecutor Christopher Becker told MLive of the defense strategy, which took on the so-called dysfunction of the victim’s family life.

The former Catholic Central High School tutor refused a plea deal that would have avoided the three-week trial and sent her to prison for just five months.

Instead, the intimate details of the sexual relationship, including more than 1,000 racy text messages between Simon and the boy, were revealed in court. Jurors found her guilty and the judge imposed a hefty sentence.

“I’m lost and I’m broken and I don’t know how to go on,” Simon said in court, according to MLive. “I’m asking you to let me go home as soon as possible.”

Simon was fired from her job as a tutor and study hall teacher in April 2013 when the boy’s mother told school administrators of the three-month relationship.

The boy initially told police he was the aggressor, stalking Simon and telling her he would kill her if she did not keep quiet. But he later testified he lied to protect her.
