Colombian authorities seized 3 tons of grade A cocaine destined for Mexico during a government initiative against a drug cartel based in the Colombian jungle region on the border of Panama.

Police officials labeled the seizure as a major victory against the Colombian Usuga cartel.

The cocaine is valued around $90 million according to Colombian Gen. Rodolfo Palomino, Chief of the national police.

“The product was departing on a river toward the Caribbean and en route to Mexico,” he said.

Last year police seized 166 tons of cocaine. After the death of Pablo Escobar and the government’s crackdown on the other drug bosses, the paramilitary and Marxists groups have taken over the cocaine trade in Mexico.

This was the second major crackdown made by Colombian law enforcement in recent days. Last week another 3 tons of cocaine destined for Mexico, was confiscated near the port city of Cartagena.
