The Mayor of the border city of Matamoros in Mexico has survived a failed attempt on her life by cartel gunmen. The brazen attempt by the battling cartels is being described as their boldest move yet.

According to the Tamaulipas State government, Mayor Leticia Salazar Vázquez security convoy came under attack by multiple cartel hitmen.

Tamaulipas is strife with violence, with factions of the Gulf Cartel engaging in a violent civil war for control the drug organization.

The attack took place on the west side of the city. Neither Salazar nor any members of her team received injuries in the attack.

The gunmen attacked from two different vehicles, spraying her security convoy with automatic weapons. Salazar has been a vocal critic of the cartels and the violence taking place in her city.

Unlike the state government, which has attempted to conceal information regarding the bloodshed taking place on almost a daily basis.

By speaking out, Salazar has also opened herself up to attacks from the local media outlets in the region. One recent story accused her security team of killing a Texas woman and her two brothers so that they could steal their car.

The news story spread and was even picked up by Mexican and U.S. media outlets. Despite the fact that the three siblings were members of the Gulf Cartel and were killed by the group after having a dispute over stolen fuel.

Breitbart News published an exclusive arrest document, which showed that U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested the three siblings for attempting to smuggle drugs into the U.S.
