The Prosecutor General of the State of Tamaulipas has announced the arrest of Alfredo Martinez Aguilar, aka “Commandante 58” on Friday.

Aguilar is a reputed leader of the Gulf Cartel in Huasteca and one of the top lieutenants to Osiel Cardenas Guillen, the former boss responsible for the recruitment of Los Zetas into the organization.

Martinez Aguilar is suspected to have committed numerous kidnappings and killings, including the murders of the son of a well-known businessman and a political leader both in the city of Ciudad Valles. Martinez Aguillar operates in practically all of the towns in this Tamaulipas region according to the Prosecutor.

Prior to recruiting the Zetas into the Gulf Cartel, “Commandante 58” was a top lieutenant to Juan Carlos de la Cruz Reyna, “El JC.” Boss of Matamoros plaza and second in command to Osiel Cardenas Guillen.

In October 2012, “El JC” began serving an 11 years prison sentence in the U.S. in for attempting to bribe a U.S. official. EL JC offered the official one million dollars in exchange for being deported back to Mexico.

Martinez Aguillar was believed to be responsible for coordinating security and setting up safe houses for Guillen, who was arrested and extradicted to the United States in 2010. Guillen was sentenced to 25 years in a U.S.federal prison for drug trafficking, money laundering and homicide.
