Mexican authorities have confirmed an ambush by cartel gunmen have left Fifteen police officers dead, with another five injured in Mexico’s Jalisco state, according to the state attorney general’s office said Tuesday.

The attack occurred in the Mascota-Las-Palmas highway on Monday. The State security convoy headed toward the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, when it came under fire by heavily armed gunmen, killing 15 members of the United Force of Jalisco, the attorney general’s office said.

The territory is home to the Jalisco “New Generation” drug cartel. The attorney general of Jailsco issued a statement, “several of our forces” were hit by gunfire, but gave no solid figures on casualties, according to Reuters. An unnamed official told Reuters at least 15 were in fact killed.

The ambush follows the murders of five federal police officers near the state capital of Guadalajara last month. Authorities blamed the Jalisco New Generation for the attack. Jalisco has grown into one of Mexico’s largest drug cartels and is listed by the U.S. and Mexican Givernemnts as major threat to national security.
