A 33-year-old Oregon female prison employee, accused of having sex six times with a male inmate at County Jail is planning to use an insanity defense at her upcoming trial.

Brett Robinson worked as a service technician at Washington County Jail. She faces 12 charges of sexual misconduct after she allegedly let an inmate out of his cell on multiple occasions and engaged in sex acts between March and July last year.

Robinson is claiming she was ‘vulnerable, passive and gullible’ and is suffering from mental illness. She is the second woman accused of sexual misconduct. Her colleague, 39-year-old Jill Curry, was sentenced to over four years in prison after she had sex with a 25-year-old gang member convicted of rape.

Robinson and the unidentified inmate began the relationship while she worked in a maximum security control room known as ‘the bubble.” The pair would use an intercom system to converse once Robinson’s manager left the room.

According to a psychologist’s report, the inmate flattered Robinson with compliments, and she began to ‘opening up’ to him early last year. Things became physical after the prisoner requested a kiss on his birthday. Once her manager had left for lunch, Robinson let the inmate out of his cell, allowing him inside the bubble.

The report says Robinson found it to be strange that he brought a blanket with him from the cell. She said “He kissed me so passionately, and I was taken aback. I asked about the blanket. He said I was hoping we could go farther, ‘we don’t have time to discuss this, so I had sex with him.”

The two continued their sexual encounters; the report said, and Robinson gave the inmate a love letter that began with ‘Hi Baby, I am hoping this letter will better convey the love I feel deep inside for you. .You are a constant presence in my thoughts, fantasies, and dreams, and I feel this pervasive emptiness without you by my side. It makes it hard to go about my normal daily activities when all I do is miss you. You are my everything, Baby – I could not envision my life without you in it.”

However, the relationship soured after Robinson began hearing reports about the abusive conduct of the inmate toward female workers elsewhere in the prison. The inmate allegedly passed a sexually illicit note to a jail nurse and forcefully kissed a female prisoner, while holding her against a wall.

The psychologist wrote in his assessment, “Robinson became delusional about the man and struggled with depression and anxiety since her childhood. ‘There is clear evidence the delusions developed in this vulnerable, passive and gullible woman were part of a Major Depressive and Anxiety episode.’

The prosecution is arguing against Robinson being allowed to use the insanity defense. Officials implicated Robinson after the inmate mentioned their relationship to a prison official investigating the Curry escapade.

A judge sentenced Curry in March to just over four years prison. Curry faced similar allegations to that of Robinson’s.

Curry also worked at the jail as services technician. Her conviction came after she got caught letting a known gang member, Jang-Li Delgado Galban, 25, out of his cell in the maximum-security unit, to have sex with him in a nearby supply closet.

Curry, who is the wife of a sheriff’s deputy, plead guilty last month to multiple sexual misconduct charges stemming from the illegal relationship.

Authorities said the sexual occurrences took place after a deputy went to lunch. Curry pushed a control button to unlock the inmate’s cell and would then meet Delgado in a supply closet to have sex. The instances occurred a total of 13 times according to prosecutor Jeff Lesowski.

Curry and the inmate got caught after someone called to report sexual improprieties involving a jail service technician to the Jail Standards Unit. After news of the scandal had surfaced, the Washington County Jail has since added surveillance cameras and increased security throughout the facility to prevent similar incidents from occurring.
