Police arrested Phoenix Mercury star Brittney Griner and her fiancee and fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson after a fight at their new home on Wednesday.

Authorities charged both players on suspicion of assault with intent to cause injury and disorderly conduct for fist fighting. Griner and Johnson were taken to the Maricopa Jail in Phoenix and released a short time later.

Representatives of the players denied all requests for comment on the situation on Thursday.

Griner told police that she and Johnson had been continuously arguing every day and that both women got into each other’s faces Wednesday afternoon in the home they had just purchased two days prior to the altercation.

According to the police report, Johnson claimed Griner “disrespected” her and had gotten a little too close, so she shoved her away.

Johnson said she turned her attention to her sister, Judy Johnson and was “pushed” in the back of her head by Griner, that’s when the two began fighting, which lasted over 5 minutes, according to the report.
Griner suffered cuts to her right wrist and a tooth mark on the middle finger of her right hand after it ended up in Johnson’s mouth, according to the police report.

Griner told police weeks of stress from the purchase of their home and planning the wedding strained the relationship, which led to the fight.

The couple was planning to get married next month.

The teams and the WNBA released a brief statement saying they were looking into the situation and working to gather the facts before commenting on the situation.

Griner was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Year and helped lead the Phoenix Mercury to their third consecutive WNBA Championship.
