The personal assistant to U.S. Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss) is charged with drug trafficking after a Thursday raid of his home uncovered over a kilo of GHB and over 181 grams of crystal meth.

Agents arrested Fred Pagan after executing a search warrant on Thursday.

The investigation began on April 9th after a package was confiscated containing over a kilo of GBL, which is used to make the date rape drug GHB. Law enforcement agencies including the D.C. police detectives, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations arm, were ivolved in the investigation.

The name listed on the package belonged to Pagan, the personal assistant to the powerful chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Senator Thad Cochran.

Pagan, 49, worked for the Senator since he was 16-years-old. He is now charged with one count of possession with the intent to distribute methamphetamine and a single count of trafficking of a controlled substance. The charges carry a maximum of 40 years in prison.

An ICE agent involved in the arrest said Pagan confessed he had received three previous shipments of GBL and understood it to be illegal. Pagan said his distributor had him receive the methamphetamine from California as a way to avoid detection.

Special Agent Mark Waugh of the Department of Homeland Security added, “Pagan admitted that he intended to use both the GBL and methamphetamine in exchange for sexual favors.”

Cochran’s office released a statement on Friday, which read: “Senator Cochran is disturbed and deeply saddened by the arrest of his long-time aide Fred Pagan, and is suspending him from all duties pending the outcome of this case.”
