A judge found the Ohio woman who gruesomely woman beheaded her 3-month-old infant daughter mentally unfit to stand trial Tuesday and instead transferred to a hospital treatment facility.

A judge in Hamilton County emitted Deasia Watkins to Summit Behavioral Healthcare in Cincinnati for mental evaluation and treatment. The judge ordered Watkins’ treatment with the goal of restoring her mental competency so she can eventually stand trial for the murder of 3-month-old Jayniah Watkins last month.

Attorneys representing Watkins’ lawyers pleaded not-guilty for her by reason of insanity.

Police responded to calls at the home of the aunt and discovered the decapitated head of the infant on the kitchen counter. Officers said they found laying in bed covered in blood and stated Watkins appeared to have had a mental breakdown.

After the court hearing, her lawyer Norman Aubin, said mental health doctors were given six months to restore mental competency and will re-evaluate the next court-hearing in October. An additional six months will be given if doctors still deem Watkins mentally unfit.

“As of right now she is incompetent because of her severe mental illness, she cannot understand the charges against her, and she cannot aid in her defense,” Aubin said.

Prior to the tragic murder, Watkins was hospitalized, and ordered to stay away from her daughter, deeming her a danger to the child. Social workers followed court orders and gave the aunt custody of the infant. However, child care officials were unaware the aunt allowed the mother to stay in the home against court orders.
