Border Patrol Seize 2,700 Pounds of Weed Inside Truck Load of Bell Peppers

Border Patrol and Customs agents discovered a massive stash of marijuana worth an estimated $1.3 million inside a shipment of bell peppers.

Officers stationed at the Mariposa commercial facility discovered the pot shipment after a drug-sniffing dog had alerted the agents during a secondary inspection of a tractor trailer.

The agents located over 2,700 pounds of marijuana in the truck’s load of bell peppers and arrested the truck’s driver identified as 38-year-old Xavier Armando Bautista-Borboa, a Mexican national from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

“We must constantly be prepared for the numerous forms of drug traffickers use to smuggle in narcotics,” said Nogales Port Director Guadalupe Ramirez. “Our officers efforts, in this case, uncovered the marijuana mixed within a load of bell peppers.”

Just a day later, another narcotics-sniffing dog alerted guards at the Mariposa crossing, who arrested 49-year-old Margarita Martinez, a Tuscon resident after getting Caught with 127 pounds of marijuana inside her Ford sedan.

Service dogs also played a role in the arrest of a Southern California couple who were discovered smuggling 168 pounds of marijuana inside their Ford SUV.

Border Patrol referred the suspects to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
