One week after the shooting death of a pregnant Louisiana woman, committed by an unknown assailant, the baby she gave birth to post mortem has passed away.

Police announced the death on Monday and have now ruled the infant’s death a homicide. The baby boy died Friday from a lack of oxygen to the brain, resulting of from the mother’s loss of blood after she was shot.

Police discovered Brittney Mills, 29, with several gun shot wounds to her torso in the doorway of her Baton Rouge residence on April 24.

Mills was eight months pregnant; doctors delivered her unborn baby, Brenton, after paramedics rushed her body to a hospital.

Police questioned La’el Collins, the former Louisiana State University offensive lineman about the Mills’ murder because he was romantically involved with her in the past. However, Police said Collins is not considered a suspect and haven’t named no other suspects.

It is unknown who the child’s father is and Collins, 21, plans to submit a paternity test, The Advocate reported.

Mills leaves behind a 10-year-old daughter. On the day of her murder, Mills had dinner with her sister and shared how excited she was about giving birth to another child WAFB reported.

The homicide has affected the start of Collins’ career; he was considered a possible top ten first-round pick in last week’s NFL draft but teams ultimately stayed away from picking Collins because of the case. However, a number of teams have contacted Collins, including the Bills, Dolphins and Giants.
