Missouri Police announced the arrest of a St. Louis man charged with the murder of an Illinois college student who disappeared after trying to sell his car on Craigslist.

Florissant Police Department Capt.Tim Fagan announced the arrest of Michael Gordon, 24, in connection with the shooting death of 19-year-old Taylor Clark late Wednesday. Fagan said Gordon is being charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action and is currently being held on $1 million bail.

Gordon’s arrest came after Police discovered email correspondence between him and Clark. Detectives said the two did not know each other prior to meeting one another.

Fagan said police arrested Gordon after discovering his name in emails Gordon traded with Clark about the car he was trying to sell.

Investigators said the two set up a meeting on Tuesday in the parking lot of the Truck Driver Training School in Hazelton, Illinois where Gordon works.

Gordon meet Clark on his lunch break; where the college student was going to allow the suspect to take the car for a test drive. Instead, Gordon murdered the 19-year-old engineering major with a single gunshot, then dumped his body in a nearby wooded area and went back to work.

Clark, who is from St. Jacob Illinois, posted an ad on Craiglist for the sale of his 2007 Nissan 350ZX for $11,000 at the time of his disappearance.

“No joyrides, it is a fun car and will be great for anyone who is looking for a fun car to drive!” Clark wrote on his April 23rd Craiglist post.

Police located Clark’s Nissan parked at a truck driving school in Hazelwood, Mo. on Tuesday night, 30 minutes from the Edwardsville campus of Southern Illinois University.

Clark’s body was located 400 yards away from the vehicle.

He was last seen visiting his girlfriend near campus and was reported missing around 10 p.m. Monday night by his parents.

“He briefly saw his girlfriend in the Glen Carbon area. She said he didn’t mention anything regarding problems with anybody or say anything that seemed suspicious he could have provided to her,” Madison County Sheriff John Lankin told KMOV.

Clark just finished his final exams, and already paid for his next semester in full,” investigators said.

Police confirmed that one interested buyer did make contact with Clark regarding the vehicle on Monday morning. Clark listed his phone number and multiple emails addresses on the ad.

Fagan said investigators are not looking for any other suspects, but are searching for the murder weapon, and attempting to discern a motive for the murder. Police are also looking for the missing car belonging to Gordon which is a red 1990 BMW 325 with Missouri license plate number FL3Z9K.

The murder of Clark follows Monday’s sentencing of a 23-year-old in St. Charles County, sentenced to life in prison for fatally stabbing a 45-year-old St. Louis man during a meeting arranged on Craigslist ad.

The killing prompted Police in Fairview Heights, Illinois, to set up a “safe exchange zone” located in a parking lot with security cameras to help residents safely broker online transactions with people they don’t know.

“You never know you’re contacting, Precautions should aleays be taken,” Fagan said.
