Denver Broncos Lineman Antonio Smith Investigated for Child Sex Abuse Allegations

DENVER–The Fort Bend County (Texas) Sheriff’s Office launched a child sex abuse investigation of Broncos defensive lineman, Antonio Smith, after allegations surfaced last November. However, Smith has not been charged.

The Sheriff’s Office said in a statement: “In November 2014, the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of a criminal allegation against Antonio Smith, According to Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls, the allegation against Mr. Smith was sexual in nature. The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division conducted a thorough investigation and presented the information to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office for review in February, 2015.”

Two months later, the Broncos signed Smith to a one-year, $2 million contract. Only his $500,000 signing bonus is fully guaranteed, providing there are no violations of the league’s personal conduct policy.

The Denver Broncos released a statement, which read: “Last night, we became aware for the first time of an allegation involving Antonio Smith, We are now in the process of gathering more information.”

The findings of the investigation Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office were turned to the District Attorney John Healey Jr. who will determine whether to present evidence to a Grand Jury to decide whether to indict or dismiss the case.

“Our Sheriff’s Office has received some information, they’re working with our office to try and find out as much information as we can about the allegation,” Healey Jr. told 9News. “At this particular point anything in reference to Mr. Smith is just that — an allegation.”

Smith, 33, is an 11-year NFL veteran who was the fifth-round by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2004 draft pick from Oklahoma State.

Smith, 33, played with the Raiders before signing a one-year deal with the Broncos.

Smith is the father of two children. He started the Little People with Big Challenges charitable foundation in Sugarland, Texas along with his sister Antwonette Smith. The foundation aims at fighting childhood obesity.
