Police in Philadelphia arrested five people for the brutal beating of a 17-year-old high school student, which was recorded on cell phone video that went viral on the Internet.

The cellphone video shows the boy cowering under the blows of a gang attack, and rolling into a ball to protect himself from being repeatedly kicked and punched. At one point, a male hits him in the face with a traffic cone, breaking his teeth.

“This kid was an innocent person, he had done nothing to anybody,” said Capt. Malachi Jones of the Philadelphia police.

The attack happened two weeks ago as the boy was walking home from school. His tormentors, who were fellow students at Martin Luther King High School, can be heard laughing and yelling as all five wail their fists and feet.

Police said the vicious beat-down was a case of mistaken identity related to a neighborhood fight a few days before.

“The victim is down on his knees on the ground, covered up (in a) defensive position. He’s not trying to attack and he’s being attacked simultaneously several times,” Jones said Thursday, according to WPVI-TV.

“You have onlookers — nobody’s assisting, nobody is rendering aid to him,” said the captain.

The five males, four of them juveniles, are facing a slew of charges including aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and robbery.

The victim suffered a concussion, several broken teeth, and required several stitches to his head, police said.

One alleged attacker, identified as Jerome Baston, is 18.

The video was shared with school officials, who summoned police and were able to recognize the attackers.
