A prison inmate in Arizona was hospitalized after he gouged his own eyeball out of its socket.

According to AZFamily.com, Colin Corkhill allegedly pulled out his right eye at Pinal County Jail near Phoenix on Thursday.

The 26-year-old  Scottsdale resident was arrested the night before on multiple charges, including auto theft, aggravated assault, resisting arrest and attempted murder.

According to Arizona Police, Corkhill was allegedly driving a stolen car when the car stalled in the median.

When a Arizona State Trooper stopped and tried to help Corkhill, he allegedly attacked the trooper. A scuffle followed and the trooper fired a shot. The officer was injured and hospitalized for a short period, but has since been discharged.

Corkhill was placed in a cell with other inmates, But was transferred to solitary confinement and placed under mental health watch after they jail officials witnessed Corkhill punching himself in the face.

Officers saw blood on the window of his cell door on Thursday night when they discovered that he’d pulled his eyeball out of its socket.

Doctors were unable to save his eye. His current condition is not known.
