It wasn’t your typical drug bust, Mooresville Police Maj. Gerald Childress admitted.

In fact, he called Tuesday’s arrest of Edward Junior Williams of China Grove on drug trafficking charges “highly unusual.”

That’s because Williams is 87 years old.

He was arrested for selling 95 individual dosages of 10 mg hydrocodone pills — a Schedule III controlled substance — to an undercover police officer, Childress said.

Williams was charged with three counts of trafficking in opium/heroin, two counts of manufacture/sell/deliver/possession of a controlled substance and one count of maintaining a dwelling/vehicle to keep/sell controlled substance.

“It is highly unusual to see someone at that age to have sold what he sold,” Childress said. “We don’t see a lot of people his age doing this with narcotics.”

Childress said Williams gave no statement as to why he was attempting to sell drugs.
“It was a level three (substance) which means stiffer penalties, and it will be up to the district attorney to determine what that will be,” he said.

Childress declined to say where the drug sale occurred, and noted that the MPD had no previous dealings with Williams. A search of statewide records turned up no previous criminal history.

Williams was still in custody Friday afternoon at the Iredell County Detention Center under $50,000 secured bond.
