LOS ANGELES — Former Chicago Bears quarterback Erik Kramer is in the hospital after an apparent suicide attempt.

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies found Kramer inside a motel after he shot himself.

He is expected to survive.

Kramer’s ex-wife says he has been dealing with depression for the last few years.

She says she believes the head injuries he suffered from football led to that.

The player’s former wife, Marshawn Kramer, also confirmed that it had been a suicide attempt.

‘He is a very amazing man, a beautiful soul, but he has suffered depression since he was with the Bears,’ she told NBC News.

‘I can promise you he is not the same man I married.’

Ms Kramer believes that Kramer’s depression is a direct result of his time in the NFL.

She continued: ‘I know Erik and I would still be together if not for his football injury.’

The couple, who divorced in 2010, lost their 18-year-old son Griffen, then a high-school quarterback, after he died from a drug overdose in 2011.

Kramer’s alleged suicide attempt comes amid fierce debate about the risks of mental health issues that former NFL players face.

Kramer bear from 1994 to 1998, and before that with the Minnesota Vikings during his 10 year NFL career.
