A Mexican Mafia member was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison for the second time for his involvement in the murder of a 21-year-old Texas woman.

Juan Adames was found guilty of capital murder last Thursday by a jury during a retrial that included testimony from a sheriff’s investigator and an accomplice to the murder.

The 62-year-old was accused of participating in the murder of a Starr County woman back in October 2003. He was originally found guilty in 2006 and sentenced to life, but the 13th Court of Appeals granted him a retrial in 2013 due to a clerical error, according to court records.

Ann Marie Garcia was murdered Oct. 22, 2003, after she witnessed a drug rip by several Mexican Mafia members at a home in Starr County.

The gang members were led to the home after a tip suggested there were at least two tons of marijuana at the residence.

The 21-year-old woman’s body, strangled and abused, was dumped on the banks of a Delta-area canal and discovered by fishermen the following day.

During the trial, the investigator who worked the case more than 12 years ago testified as did one of Adames’ former Mexican Mafia associates, Luis Carlos Mares.

The jury found Adames guilty of drugging Garcia with deadly doses of heroin before strangling and dumping the woman’s body in Hidalgo County.

The court appointed a new appellate attorney for Adames on Wednesday as he prepares to appeal the most recent decision.
