Two recently declassified intelligence assessments of Mexican drug cartels conducted by the DEA, produced a map of their areas of influence in Mexico and in the United States. It indicated that heroin remains in high demand in the U.S. The heroin market has been largely controlled  by the Sinaloa drug cartel, however the hegemony of  the Sinaloa is seriously threatened by the upstart rivals of Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

WASHINGTON (Processo) .- “After separating from the Sinaloa Cartel in 2010,” the New Generation Jalisco Cartel (CJNG) “became the organization of drug trafficking with the rapid capacity for expansion in Mexico”; and now the territorial distribution of the Sinaloa drug in the United States control is seriously threatened by its new upstart rivals from the Jalisco state.

The diagnosis is clear from one of two “assessments” carried out by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), recently declassified.

“The Sinaloa cartel maintains a significant presence in the United States. The organization is proficient in the West Coast, the Midwest and Northwest.

“And although it seems the CJNG maintains limited presence on the West Coast, this is still a significant concern. The cartel is quickly becoming one of the most powerful in Mexico, so the DEA anticipates that its presence will grow in the United States in the next year, ” emphasizes another declassified document.

The findings of the DEA, based on research and counternarcotics operations for a whole year, which was presented to the Obama administration in July, are accompanied by maps in which the power and presence of the Sinaloa Cartel is illustrated in the US. It also illustrates the growing influence of the CJNG and the threat it now poses, which could become the number one syndicate in Mexico.

Titled “Mexico: evaluation update on key areas of control of major drug trafficking organizations,” the declassified document shows how the Mexican territory is divided between cartels.

“Since the organization maintains it’s stronghold in Jalisco, the areas of influence of CJNG has now spread to Nayarit, Colima, Guerrero, Veracruz and Michoacan. The DEA report states the organization recently expanded its domain to the states of Guanajuato and San Luis Potosi, and increased its presence along the coastal states of Chiapas and Oaxaca.

The detailed report lists the major international drug trafficking organizations in Mexico, in order of importance:

1. The Sinaloa Cartel

2) The CJNG

3. The Beltran Leyva

4. Los Zetas

5. the Gulf cartel

6. The Juarez / La Linea cartel

7. La Familia Michoacana

8.  Knights Templar  cartel

The intelligence report states that in the last year, La Familia Michoacana and the Knights Templar capabilities have significantly degraded as an organizational crime group after the arrests and deaths of its leaders.
