Mexican officals said ten people died in separate drug-related shootouts in the northwestern Mexican state of Sinaloa on Wednesday.

The two shootouts occurred in the city of El Rosario, Sinaloa Attorney General’s Office spokesmen told EFE.

Six men were killed in the community of Las Yacas and three others were gunned down in Cacalotan in shootouts between rival drug cartels fighting for control of the southern mountain region of Sinaloa.

Five people were wounded in the shootouts and transported to hospitals in the port city of Mazatlan.

Five vehicles were seized by the security forces, the AG’s office said.

Sinaloa is home to the powerful drug cartel that bears the state’s name.

The Sinaloa organization, sometimes referred to by Mexican officials as the Pacific cartel, is the oldest drug cartel in Mexico and has large smuggling and distribution networks in South America, the United States and Europe.

The cartel is led by Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman, who escaped from a prison in central Mexico through a tunnel on July 11.

Guzman, who is considered the most powerful drug trafficker in the world, tops the list of Mexico’s most-wanted criminals and is on the Forbes list of the world’s richest people.

The Sinaloa cartel, according to intelligence agencies, is a transnational business empire that operates in Western Europe, Eastern Europe, North and South America and Asia, with cells present in 58 different countries world wide.

The narco-related violence in Sinaloa followed bloodshed in Tijuana, where a shootout left 2 men killed and 7 people injured, including a woman, early Tuesday, outside the “La Esperanza” funeral home located in the Zona Centro district.
