A police officer in Louisiana was killed after he was shot with his own gun while responding to a call of a triple stabbing. by a suspect , who was identified as the officer’s cousin.

Sunset Officer Henry Nelson, 52, was shot after responding to a dispute at involving his cousin Harrison Lee Riley Jr. after the crazed ex-con reportedly stabbed his sisters Shameka and Surlay Johnson, who were trying to protect his wife during the domestic dispute Wednesday, police said.

Riley Jr. then went on a rampage, first crashing his car through a convenience store before running naked inside the store and barricading himself inside without taking hostages, the Daily Advertiser reported.

A Police SWAT team using tear gas, hammers and fire axes,  made its way inside the store and took Riley into custody, St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz said. He was hospitalized after complaining of rib pain and was later charged with first-degree murder of a police officer, among other charges.

He is in a maximum security part of jail and is suspected of possibly carrying a “communicable disease,” police said without elaborating.

Shameka Johnson, 41, died Wednesday, and Surlay Johnson, 34, is hospitalized in critical condition. Riley’s wife, Courtney Jolivette-Riley, was hospitalized in stable condition.

A public information officer for the sheriff’s office said he did not know exactly how Nelson learned of the dispute in a house belonging to the Johnsons’ mother.

Nelson, who started with the 14-person department in 2002, was outgoing and friendly, Sunset Police Chief Luis Padilla said. He was set to begin a month-long vacation with his teen daughters on Friday.

Nothing made him mad,” Padilla said. “He loved life. Came into work with a smile and left work with a smile.”

But his cousin had a very different history, racking up 14 arrests across multiple states.

Riley was a regular at the Sunset Food Mart, where he bullied people Wednesday while searching for the owners.

Nini Truong, 15, said she didn’t know what Riley wanted to do with her parents, who own the store but were not there at the time.

“Everybody’s freaking out,” she said. “People are trying to get out and I didn’t know what to do.”

Clerk Tammy Adams said she recognized the bloodied man.

“I’m just grateful to God that I was able to get out of there,” Adams said crying.

The Johnsons’ other sister, Shaterral, is the interim mayor of neighboring town Grand Coteau. She thanked people for their support and prayers.
