Three men are accused of beating someone as part of a gang initiation in Lexington, Kentucky police said.

The alleged gang members were arrested last Thursday, by Lexington police and are identified as Gregory Smith, 49, Gerald Smith, 29, and Trevor Spencer, 25.

A fourth man was also arrested and accused of beating someone as part of a gang initiation in Lexington. Officers arrested 42-year-old Thomas Wallace, Jr. on Friday night.

Investigators say on September 5, 2014, three of the suspects were seen with other people assaulting someone in Whitney Young Park. Police say many children and parents were in the park at the time for a sporting event.

Police say the nationally recognized Chicago-based gang Black P Stones is active in Lexington.

“Every city has a gang problem because you have youth, and you have youth violence and social media, there is no geographical areas that are working with gangs anymore. Every city and every town has to recognize that if you have disgruntled youth or you have individuals looking into wanting to be associated with something, you’re gonna have some formalized gang initiation or problem,” explained Lexington Chief of Police Mark Barnard.

Both Smiths pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor charge of criminal gang recruitment.

In addition to the criminal gang recruitment charge, Spencer is facing charges of trafficking marijuana, trafficking synthetic marijuana, trafficking cocaine, and possession of a handgun by a felon.

After those arrests Lexington’s Chief of Police, Mark Barnard, told WKYT he anticipated more arrests.

Barnard says the arrests are more than a year in the making with surveillance of individuals allowing officers to learn about and monitor recruitment going on for the Black P Stones.
