City of Chicago records it first gun-related homicide of the new year

The city of Chicago recorded its fist homicide of the new year, and an additional 15 people were injured in gun-related violence just hours into the new year.

The shooting death old a 24-year-old man is the city’s first recorded homicide of 2016, which occurred shortly after two a.m. in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood — just a few blocks from the of the University of Chicago.

Police said a the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the chest and died at the scene. A Police spokeswoman said no arrests have been made, and the suspected gunman is still at large.

The first shooting of 2016 took place at 12:05 a.m, which left one person injured in South Chicago.

Another three men – ranging in ages 20, 22 and 26 were shot at a gas station in the Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood on the city’s South Side. In total Police reported 15 gun- related injuries in the early hours of 2016.

Despite a reduction in the overall crime rate in 2015, the murder rate in Chicago increased 13 percent and gun-related incidents rose 16 percent compared to 2014.
