The “Evil Eye” of Putin awaits in Mordor, Russia.

A Google translation “technical error” left the worldwide tech giant scrambling for answers, after people started seeing errors in translations in the company’s Ukrainian and Russian function last weekend.

Screenshots of the translation errors began showing up on social media, which included Russians are “occupiers” — a reference to Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Crimea, Russia is “Mordor” from Lord of the Rings, and foreign minister Sergey Lavrov is “grustnaya loshadka”, or “sad little horse”.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine almost two years ago, annexing Crimea, Ukrainians have referred to Russia as “Mordor” from the fantasy epic Lord of the Rings according to The Telegraph.

Red-faced Google execs released a statement on Russians media outlets saying that technical error caused the mistranslations.

“When Google Translate creates an automatic translation, it uses examples from hundreds of millions of documents, to distinguish which variant is most appropriate,” the statement said.
