PHILADELPHIA — A religious fanatic who opened fire at a Philadelphia police officer as he sat at an intersection in his cruiser late Thursday has admitted to investigators he acted in the name of Islam and that he pledged allegiance to ISIS.

The gunman, identified as Edward Archer, allegedly opened fire 13 times with a gun that was stolen from a police officer, hitting Officer Jesse Hartnett 3 times in the arm on Thursday night. Police captured a short time later.

Archer said he shot Hartnett in the name of Islam and pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, Philadelphia Police Captain James Clark revealed.

“The suspect said he was called upon to do this because he swore his allegiance to the Islamic State, that he follows Allah,  Clark said.

Hartnett suffered a broken bone and nerve damage from the shooting but is in stable condition, police said.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said Harnett was sitting in his cruiser in West Philly when Archer walked and sprayed the cop car with bullets from a stolen 9mm semiautomatic pistol at point-blank range.

Police Commissioner Richard Ross said Harnett was sitting in his cruiser in West Philly when Archer walked and sprayed the cop car with bullets from a stolen 9mm semi-automatic pistol at point-blank range.

“This is one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen,” Ross said at a news conference early Friday. “This guy tried to execute the police officer. The police officer had no idea he was coming.”`

“He has confessed to committing this cowardly act in the name of Islam, he believes that the police defend laws that are contrary to the teaching of the Koran,” Ross said.

Ross added that Archer hold a grudge against cops because he believes they are anti-Islamic.

“When you look at the video — we have video, that captured all of this — it’s one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen. This guy tried to execute him. It’s amazing he’s alive,” said Ross.

Investigators said the gun Archer used was stolen from the home of a police in 2013. It’s unknown how many other hands the gun passed through before it got to Archer.

The FBI and Homeland Security are working with the Philadelphia Police Dept. to investigate whether this case is linked to a radical terrorist group, sources said.
