According to German authorities in the city of Cologne, the number of sexual assault criminal complaints filed has increased to 516, stemming from the New Years Eve attacks on German women by a group of Muslim migrants.

According to witnesses, women were reportedly forced to run through “a gauntlet” of attackers among a group of 1,000 men, mostly of Arabic or North African descent, who had gathered at Cologne’s central train station for the New Years Eve celebrations.

That night alone there were over 200 sexual assault complaints filed. Police officers were massively outnumbered and rendered helpless as the women came under attack.

Investigators said the focus of the investigation was concentrating on a group of suspects, primarily of North African origin.

The horrific incident has put pressure on Chancellor Angela Merkel and her government because of its liberal open door policy for migrants and refugees seeking asylum. Germany has granted asylum to nearly 1.1 million migrants in 2015 alone.

The German justice minister Heiko Mass said Sunday authorities are determining whether there is a link between the Cologne attacks and other reported assaults in European cities.

“If such a horde gathers to commit crimes, that appears to be in some form planned, “Nobody can tell me that this was not coordinated or prepared,” Heiko Maas told the German newspaper Bild.

Attacks were reported in other German cities but on a much smaller scale. Police in the northern town of Hamburg have opened an investigation of reported sexual assaults and thefts in the St. Pauli district.

Sweden and Finland’s authorities are also investigating similar incidents perpetrated by Muslim migrants.

Mass added, “All connections must be carefully checked. “There is a suspicion of a chosen particular date with expected crowds. That would then be a new dimension.”

Out of 31 suspects held for questioning by Police, 18 seek asylum. However, there were also two Germans, an American and others questioned. Bit authorities have not charged any of them with taking part in the sexual assaults.

So far Police has released few details, Bild reported on Sunday said, one of the suspects is a 22-year-old Tunisian migrant, who is registered at a refugee center in a neighboring state.

Another two suspects were identified as Moroccans ages 18 and 23, were reportedly in the country illegally, according to their attorney.

“Our clients are modern nomads,” attorney Ingo Lindemann told the newspaper. “They’re not war refugees but more like grown street children who move with the flow of refugees across Europe.”

Cologne Police also announced on Saturday night the arrested a 19-year-old Moroccan man on allegations he stole a 23-year-old woman’s cellphone on New Year’s and discovered the identities of 19 other suspects.

Police said the Moroccan, who they said, has been involved in various crimes since 2013, isn’t accused of a sexual offense, but the investigation is ongoing.
