A federal court in Mexico has started criminal proceedings against Ivan Gastelum Avila, known as “El Cholo Ivan,” a plaza boss and chief of assassins for the Sinaloa cartel after his capture along with drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman last Friday by Mexican marines in the town of Los Mochis.

The Mexican Attorney General charged Gastelum Avila with the trafficking of drugs, weapons and the murder of a Mexican soldier in 2013.

El Cholo and Guzman fled through a storm drain after Mexican marines launched a predawn raid in Los Mochis, Sinaloa. Both men were later apprehended in a stolen car on a highway outside of town.

The Mexican military first arrested Gastelum back in 2008 and after a year imprisoned, he managed to escape in 2009 by using a party at the state prison as a diversion.

Gastelum soon became the subject of an intense manhunt by the government. Authorities nearly nabbed El Cholo Ivan on three occasions in 2010, 2014 and 2015, in every instance gunfire was exchanged where it is believed he sustained injuries but he still managed to narrowly evade capture.

El Cholo is believed to have commanded a legion of hit men for the Sinaloa cartel and is suspected in countless murders committed on the direct orders of “Chapo” Guzman.
