The legal team who are fighting the extradition of Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman to the United States, where he faces a litany of indictments for drug-related crimes are citing Donald Trump as the reason the drug baron won’t receive a fair trial in an American court.

Mexican Marines recently recaptured Guzman after an intense gun battle last week in the town of Los Mochis. He now faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in a U.S. prison.

Lawyers for the cartel boss claim that any trial in U.S. courts will be biased and presented Trump’s statements as evidence to the court in Mexico.

The Republican candidate for President made remarks many view as disparaging in June when he referred to Mexican immigrants as being “rapists and murderers.”

Now that El Chapo is back behind bars, Mexican officials have decided they want Guzman to be prosecuted and imprisoned in the United States.

Following El Chapo’s first February 2014 capture, U.S. authorities repeatedly urged the Mexican government officials to extradite the drug lord to the states and warned Mexico lacked the capacity to hold Guzman. However, President Enrique Pena Nieto wanted Guzman first to face justice in a Mexican court.

Despite the fact El Chapo was placed in Mexico’s most secure prison, he still managed to escape back on July 11th, 2015 through a mile-long tunnel dug underneath his cell equipped with lighting, oxygen pipes and a motorbike-mounted on rails.

Legal experts say the Guzman’s attorneys will exhaust the appeals process, which could take at least a year to resolve before he sees the inside of a U.S. courtroom.

Mexican authorities are holding Guzman at the same Altiplano maximum security prison; where he escaped are now regularly changing his cells in an attempt to thwart a third prison escape.

Trump has made the issue of border security and illegal immigration the forefront of his presidential campaign, which has vaulted him to first in the polls and currently remains the frontrunner for the Republican nomination.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best, they’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those issues to us. They’re bringing drugs, bringing crime. And some, I assume, are good people,” Trump said at the launch of his campaign in June.
