An Ohio cop in Knox County has turned up dead outside a municipal building early Monday morning. Officer Thomas Cottrell went missing after a suspect stole his police cruiser, according to local reports.

The Knox County Sheriff’s Office said troopers had first discovered the blood splattered hat belonging to Cottrell near his last reported location of his patrol car, which was the first indicator the officer had encountered trouble while responding to a call.

The body of the fallen officer was found a short time later outside a Municipal Building, in Danville, which is a town with 1,000 residents located 50 miles northeast of Colombus, Ohio.

According to the Plain Dealer, Cottrell’s cruiser went missing from Danville around midnight and was later discovered in a nearby wooded area.

Police captured a suspect two hours after Cottrell was first reported missing. The alleged attack follows the first law enforcement fatality of 2016 after a Utah police officer was shot and killed Sunday morning during an armed confrontation with a robbery suspect near Salt Lake City.
