The Mexican Attorney General, Arely Gomez revealed that the investigation into actress Kate del Castillo involvement with drug lord Joaquin El Chapo Guzman centers around possible allegations of money laundering involving her tequila company Honor del Castillo and not her intentions to make a film.

In an interview with El Universal, Gomez said the agency is investigating the actress for possible illegal proceeds given by Guzman but indicated there is no certainty that a crime was committed.

Surveillance tapes from the investigation between the Mexican actress and El Chapo’s lawyer revealed that Guzman showed interest in investing in Del Castillo’s tequila company.

“The investigation is on whether del Castillo received illegal proceeds for her new tequila, not on her desire make a film,” Gomez said.

Del Castillo arranged a seven-hour meeting between actor Sean Penn and Guzman, which took place on Oct. 2. The interview helped authorities track down the elusive drug lord, who was captured on Jan. 8th. A day later, Rolling Stone magazine published the interview.

Mexican authorities are also investigating if Sean Penn any committed any crimes stemming from the interview and Gomez indicated that the award-winning actor could be called to testify

Gomez says officials want to question Del Castillo, who hasn’t replied to the requests for comment. She broke her silence last week on Twitter when she said many people are making up “items they think will make good stories.”

Meanwhile, Guzman’s lawyers are accusing Sean Penn of lying in his interview with the drug lord and are demanding he testify.

“Where’s the proof? Where’s the audio?” Juan Pablo Badillo, who is the legal counsel of El Chapo, asked.

Badillo says Penn lied in the Rolling Stone article, noting the part where Chapo boasts about drug trafficking, and he being responsible for trafficking more drugs than anyone else in the world.

Penn said in his interview video or audio to record the meeting was not allowed. The actor claims Chapo bragged about his operation in the interview, where he said “I supply more heroin, methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana than anybody else in the world. I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats.”

For sure it was a statement that was difficult to comprehend, as to why Chapo would utter such a claim, especially to a person he just met and on record.

“It is a lie, absurd speculation from Mr. Penn,” Badillo, told Reuters in an interview, “Its a lie, pointless speculation from Mr. Penn,” Juan Pablo Badillo, one of a team of Guzman lawyers, told Reuters in an interview on Wednesday.

“In a way, yes, it does complicate things, Mr Penn should be called to testify to respond about the stupidities he has said,” Badillo added.

Badillo added that based on all the years he has worked for Guzman; he was certain the drug lord would not make such a self-incriminating statement. “He could not have made these claims”.
