A public prosecutor in Puerto Rico was fatally gunned down in the early Tuesday by an unknown assailant at her home in the northern coastal town of Rio Grande, which is a suburb of San Juan, authorities said.

Investigators said the attackers followed Francelis Ortiz Pagan 42, home, as she arrived, the gunmen opened fire, mortally wounding wounded her in front of her house.

Ortiz Pagan’s husband rushed to alert police officers at a gas station about the shooting.

The public prosecutor was immediately rushed to the University of Puerto Rico Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives and prosecutor Melianis Vargas investigating the murder have indicated there could be a link between the killing and a case prosecuted by Ortiz Pagan though as yet no such details are known.

The Gov. of Puerto Rico, Alejandro Garcia Padilla expressed his sadness and regret over the prosecutor’s death, whom he knew personally, calling her “a public servant of excellence and dedication.”

“Her murder saddens us and fills us with indignation. I have given specific instructions to find out who is responsible for this horrific crime,” Garcia Padilla said.
