Police say a convicted felon who served 15 years on child rape charges surrendered in the murder of 39-year-old Jessica Colker, an American tourist on vacation on the island of Grenada.

Police officials said Colker was killed Sunday morning after a man wielding a cutlass-style blade attacked she and her husband Brian Melito, 62, as they walked on the beach near the resort where they stayed.

According to local reports, her husband escaped the attack. However, the body of Colker was discovered just a short time later.

The murder suspect identified as Dave Martin Benjamin managed to escape the scene of the crime, but surrendered to St. David authorities on Monday.

Benjamin is a convicted felon who was released from prison just last month after serving 15 years for a child rape.

The U.S. Embassy in Barbados said it is assisting in the Police investigation.

“The Embassy is working closely with officials investigating Ms. Colker’s death, and asks that the public respects her family’s privacy during this difficult time,” officials said.

Colker was a physician’s assistant at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the staff at the hospital expressed their shock and anguish over Colker’s horrific murder.

“Jessica was a valued member of our Children’s team,” hospital spokeswoman Julie Holkeboer stated to the paper. “Everyone is deeply saddened by this horrific news. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this tough time.”

Grenada Police spokesman Sylvan McIntyre said to reporters: ‘What I can tell you now is that he is in custody. He was not captured, but he surrendered. Our investigations will continue as we believe he can assist us with our investigation into the incident.’
