Mexico’s bloody drug war has claimed the most innocent of victims after a seven-month-old baby boy was gunned down as his drug dealing father held him in his arms.

Horrific photos showing the bodies of seven-month-old Marcos Miguel Pano-Colon laying next to his dead parents in Oaxaca has rocked Mexico, sparking shock and outrage around the world.

According to media reports, the murders of Pano-Colon and his father, 24-year-old Juan Alberto Pano-Ramos and his 17-year-old mother Alba Isabel Colón in the city of Pinotepa Nacional on Friday night, was part of an ongoing turf war between rival drug gangs.

Mexico’s Noticiasnet.mx is reporting that his parents were low-level drug dealers who worked for local cartel drug lord Isidro “El Isis” Gonzalez Jeronimo, who was also killed in the attack.

Facebook groups, such as this one for Acapulco in nearby Gurrero state, shared the images and compared Marcos to Syrian Alan Kurdi, who drowned off the coast of Turkey

A hit team from a rival cartel group targeted Gonzalez-Jeronimo for death in an attempt to move in on his territory.

As the drug boss and his bodyguards met with the couple at a local shopping center, the hit squad moved in and opened fire, setting off an intense gun battle. Pano Ramos and his wife attempted to flee with the child in his arms but were cut down by a barrage of gunfire.

According to CNN, Mexican authorities have detained four suspects, who are alleged gang members in connection with the slayings.

Images showing the child laying dead next to his parents dead bodies surfaced on social media which prompted many people to demand the baby’s murder receives the same attention as Aylan Kurdi, the 3-year-old Syrian refugee who drowned off the coast of Turkey.

One Facebook user commented, ‘There should be no likes for this image. If you must, it is better to have many or millions of comments of sympathy, and [comments of] contempt for the cowards who did this and the ineptitude of the federal government.”

Roxana Yarani Añorve commented on the culture of violence inflicting her country. “This is our sad and terrible reality: that we live in a rotten country, where our independence from foreign powers did not help us much, where we are now our own tormentors… today we are cowards and allow this pass… the laws are just for show.”
