Law enforcement officials in Puerto Rico announced the arrest of the head of an auto theft gang whose members have been charged with last month’s slaying of a San Juan prosecutor.

Corrections Secretary Einar Ramos-Lopez confirmed the arrest of James O. “Pilin” Santana-Gonzalez, on Friday night in a San Juan neighborhood.

Ramos-Lopez said authorities received a confidential tip that led to the gang leader’s arrest.

The secretary said the 33-year-old Santana Gonzalez managed to escape from custody last year after he was convicted of murder and subsequently sentenced to 165 years in prison.

Police officials have not disclosed whether the suspect would face charges in the prosecutor’s killing. Last month three members of Santana-Gonzalez’s crew had been accused of the murder of 42-year-old San Juan prosecutor Francelis Ortiz.

Ortiz was shot in the face several times after she was followed home by the men, who allegedly spotted the prosecutor at an intersection.
