Authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with Saturday’s shooting of a Mississippi police officer, who remains in critical condition with a bullet lodged in his brain.

Clarksdale Police Cpl. Derrick Couch was shot point blank in the eye after confronting one of the two robbery suspects.

Couch is currently on a ventilator at the Regional One Health in Memphis, Tennessee. The five-year veteran of the Clarksdale force is married with one child.

The incident was captured on surveillance camera which shows the armed men leaving the Corner Grocery Store. Couch confronted one of the suspects four blocks from the store when he was shot.

“I’ve seen the video, it’s harrowing,” Clarksdale Mayor Bill Luckett said.

“As soon the corporal approached the suspect, he just swung around and ‘Bam!” Luckett said.

The bullet fired from the suspect’s gun hit Couch in the face, who immediately fell to the ground where officers found him minutes later. Police said the first suspect was arrested Sunday afternoon after his father dragged him to a police station.

A search conducted in the family’s home found “telling evidence” linked to the shooting.

Luckett said the second suspect was apprehended around 4 p.m. Sunday.
