A new CBS report has revealed that law enforcement officials were well aware of Sean Penn’s infamous meeting with the nefarious drug kingpin known as El Chapo and was even tracked by the government.

U.S. and Mexico officials confirmed on a segment of “60 Minutes” which is set to air Sunday night, to having knowledge of the actor’s plans to travel to meet Guzman, who was recaptured back on Jan.8th in the seaside city of Los Mochis.

The segment includes an interview with former Department of Homeland Security investigations division chief Jim Dinkins, who shed further light on whether Mexican police knew the actor was visiting El Chapo.

In a clip of the segment, Dinkins indicated that Mexican authorities “knew exactly where and when Sean Penn was going, and when he was going to land…they knew right away.”

In a previous interview with “60 Minutes”, Penn said he was under the assumption that Mexican officials knew of his meeting and further stated how he was shocked that Guzman still agreed to go through with the interview.

Sean Penn interviewed El Chapo with help from Mexican actress Kate del Castillo, who had expressed interest in making a biopic about the drug lord.

Kate del Castillo, the famous Mexican actress who played the key role in arranging the encounter, recently said how she was unaware of Penn’s intentions to conduct the interview for Rolling Stone and explained how she felt betrayed by the actor.

Former Homeland Security and Department of Justice official Peter Vincent told 60 Minutes how the drug lord suffered from his ego and believed in his legend after escaping from prison for the second time.

“He (El Chapo) became drunk on his own wine and started to believe the hype. He thought he was untouchable,” Vincent stated.

The news program also interviewed the Mexican Marines who raided the cartel leader’s compound in the early-morning hours who explained how El Chapo managed to escape through a trap door that led to the city’s sewer system.

However, because torrential rains waters had filled the sewer system, it forced Guzman to flee above ground.

According to CBS, Federal police officers cuffed El Chapo along with another top figure in the Sinaloa cartel and took them to a nearby hotel parking lot, where Guzman tried one last time to slip away using the old narco adage “Plata o Plomo” which translates to silver or lead.

“Bribes and threats, bribes and bullets, but luckily the Mexican Marines showed up, realized what was going on and took control of the situation,” Vincent said.

After the embarrassing escape of Guzman, the Mexican government now seem hellbent on seeing El Chapo prosecuted and subsequently jailed in a U.S. prison for the rest of his life.
