Mexico’s Secretary of the Interior along with the warden of the prison where Sinaloa Cartel boss Joaquin Guzman Loera alias El Chapo is currently held are vehemently denying allegations of torture made by the wife and lawyers of Guzman.

In her first ever televised interview, Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of the infamous drug lord, told Telemundo on Feb. 21 that she feared for her husband’s life.

Coronel has even lodged an official complaint with the Mexican National Human Rights Commission on behalf of her husband.

However, Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, the head of the Interior fired back at the allegations during a radio interview on Tuesday, where he stated that the cartel boss is being “treated for what he is, a criminal.”

“There is no abuse, his human rights are protected, but we are following protocol in handling the prisoner like we do for every inmate,” Osorio said.

When he was asked about Guzman’s extradition, Osorio responded,”the process will determine when this offender will face American justice.”

Osorio added that he remained confident that Guzman will see the inside of a U.S. courtroom.

Salvador Almonte Solís, the warden of the Altiplano maximum security prison also refuted the claims made by El Chapo’s wife, stating that the cartel king has not been mistreated and countering that the allegations are an attempt to skirt the prison security protocols during his incarceration.

“This office would not inflict pain or severe suffering that could be construed as torture against the accused,” Almonte-Solis said at a press conference

He further accused El Chapo’s wife, and his lawyer is engaging in a public relations campaign on behalf of El Chapo to make him out to be a victim.

Coronel specifically accused the prison warden of depriving her husband of sleep and denying visits by his family. Furthermore, his attorneys recently claimed that guards at the detention center were turning their client into a “zombie.”

“The allegations are entirely false that [El Chapo’s] rest is disturbed in the evening hours or during the day,” the Warden said.

Almonte Solís also disputed claims that El Chapo’s family have been denied access to visit him.

“The fact that he [El Chapo] has not had any family visits is not attributable to this office, rather to his family members, who have not demonstrated an interest to comply with rules and terms of authorized visits.”

Guzman has been held in the Altiplano prison since he was recaptured back on January 8th by Mexican Marines in the seaside city of Los Mochis.

The drug lord escaped from the same prison on July 11th, 2015 through an elaborate tunnel that led directly underneath the shower area of his jail cell.
