Police in Mexico arrest top Los Zetas cartel boss

Police in Mexico have arrested a reputed leader of Los Zetas drug cartel on Tuesday in the municipality of Zuazua, located 22 miles north of Mexico City, Proceso Magazine reported.

The Attorney General’s Office (PGR) announced the capture of 37-year-old Fernando Aguilera Hernandez, alias “El Pelon, identified as the second in command of the Cartel Del Norte or Cartel of the North (CDN) a Zetas faction based in Nuevo Leon.

Police stopped the SUV Aguilera Hernandez traveled in on Tuesday evening at a checkpoint that had been deployed because of an alert of a child kidnapping.

The cartel capo attempted to flee on foot, resulting in a chase that ended with his eventual arrest. Authorities discovered undisclosed amounts of cash and marijuana in his vehicle.

The PGR said an arrest warrant was issued for Aguilera Hernandez on a kidnapping charge. However, officials haven’t revealed whether it’s related to the child abduction report.

Los Zetas, long considered to be Mexico’s most violent drug cartel, have factionalized in recent years after the loss of top leadership, who have either been killed or captured by Mexican forces.

The split has led to an ongoing violent civil war in the city of Ciudad Victoria between the CDN and a rival faction called”Grupo Bravo,” who are fighting for control of key drug smuggling routes.

Unspeakable acts violence in the city stemming from the cartel war, which would include countless murders, gruesome decapitations, and daily shootouts has left the residents of Ciudad Victoria living in a constant state of fear.
