Authorities in Mexico have discovered over 25 tons of marijuana on a rolled over tractor-trailer abandoned on a rural road in the Mexican state of Sonora.

According to Breitbart News, the Mexican military made the seizure earlier this week near the rural community of Huetabampo after a military convoy patrolling the area spotted the rolled over rig.

As Marines went to further investigate the accident scene, they uncovered 2,495 bundles of marijuana, each weighing approximately 22 pounds.

Officials said the total weight of the confiscated weed totaled 55 thousand pounds equating to 25 metric tons.

Authorities believe the driver swerved in an attempt to avoid a police checkpoint causing the trailer to overturn.

The driver is believed to have fled the scene after the crash had occurred and authorities said there were no signs of drug smugglers in the area.

The military seized the massive drug shipment, which was turned over to Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office for investigation.

Law enforcement officials said the trailer appeared to be heading north from the coastal area, toward another primary drug distribution area before eventually being shipped north into the widely unprotected borders of Arizona, Breitbart reported.

The state of Sonora is considered part of the Golden Triangle, a region in Mexico long known for drug production under the control of the Sinaloa cartel that includes the neighboring states of Sinaloa and Durango.
