NYPD officials say a 42-year-old federal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head in an apparent suicide at Manhattan’s Chelsea Piers on Friday.

According to the New York Daily News, the federal agent whose identity has been withheld, shot himself in the head with his service weapon in the walkway of Pier 40, leading to the soccer fields located near Hudson River Park around 11:30 a.m.

Paramedics treated the ICE agent for a massive head wound at the scene, before rushing him to Lenox Hill Hospital where he died a short time later.

“A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportation officer from the New York field office had tragically passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” ICE officials said in a written statement released on Friday.

The federal agency, which enforces the nation’s immigration laws said an investigation into the apparent suicide is under investigation by ICE’s Office of Professional Standards.

Officials have withheld the agent’s identity pending notification of next of kin. Sources have disclosed that the federal officer worked at the ICE field office located just blocks from the scene of the shooting.
