Former two-time Stanley Cup winner Kevin Stevens has been charged in Massachusetts Federal Court with conspiring to sell prescription painkillers.

According to The Boston Globe, federal prosecutors charged 51-year-old Kevin Stevens and co-defendant, Christopher Alonardo, both from Massachusettes, on Thursday with conspiracy and possession with intent to distribute oxycodone.

Over the course of his 15-year NHL career, Stevens, who was born in Brockton and raised in Pembroke, won two consecutive Stanley Cups in 1991-92 while playing with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Stevens has a history of battling substance abuse and before his 2002 retirement, had entered the NHL’s Substance Abuse Program.

The former Pittsburgh Penguins Attorney John Commisso says his client still is plagued by pain and other challenges stemming from injuries he sustained over the course of his playing career.

Commisso said he expected Stevens to be released in the next few days, both men are in custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for Tuesday.
